2024 Open Call For Research Proposals:
Request for Pre-Proposal Applications

The AKC Canine Health Foundation (CHF) is dedicated to advancing the health of all dogs through funding scientific research. In support of our mission to prevent, treat, and cure canine disease, we seek high-impact research proposals that foster critical discoveries that enable dogs to live healthier lives.
This award aims to promote studies leading to significant advancements in any of CHF’s 23 Research Program Areas with an emphasis on one of the following five impact areas:
- Investigation of the nature of canine disease
- Establishment of evidence-based practices to improve health or patient outcomes
- Development of transformative technologies or novel therapeutic interventions with potential for broad application
- Multi-disciplinary approaches that embrace highly innovative solutions to complex problems
- Examination of under-studied or unrecognized disease risks
Application Process
This Open Call follows a two-tiered system of competitive review. Applicants must submit a Pre-Proposal Application through the on-line grants system that demonstrates meritorious work closely aligned with CHF’s mission to prevent, treat, and cure canine disease. A review committee will invite some Pre-Proposal applicants to submit a Full Proposal.
Project Budget & Additional Considerations
Pre-proposal applications must:
- Demonstrate a clear understanding of a canine health need that aligns with CHF's mission
- Propose a well-designed project to address the problem
- Have a summarized budget with minimum funding of $100,000, including 8% indirect costs
- Utilize the pre-proposal template and not exceed three pages
Eligibility and Evaluation Criteria
Conformance to application requirements and templates is enforced, and submissions that do not comply may be declined or delayed. Projects must strictly adhere to the Foundation's Humane Use of Animals Policy and eligibility requirements.
Reviewers will evaluate the submission based on scientific merit, alignment with CHF’s mission, methodology, feasibility, and expertise of the investigative team.
Application Deadline
- Pre-proposal applications closed on June 4th, 2024.
- Applicants will be notified of their pre-proposal application status on or before June 21st, 2024
- If invited, full research proposals are due by August 2nd, 2024.

Help Future Generations of Dogs
Participate in canine health research by providing samples or by enrolling in a clinical trial. Samples are needed from healthy dogs and dogs affected by specific diseases.
