Abstract

The purpose of this investigation is to determine the level of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) and basic Fibroblast Growth Factor (bFGF) expression in dogs with oral malignant melanoma. Serum and plasma levels of these growth factors will be determined for 20 dogs with oral melanoma and 20 control dogs using validated ELISA testing. Immunohistochemistry will be performed on 20 canine oral malignant melanomas to determine tumor expression of VEGF and bFGF. Statistical analysis will be performed to establish the association between the clinical stage of melanoma in each patient and the level of growth factor expression. These data may be correlated to survival time to determine if growth factor expression is a measurable prognostic factor and a potential target for future treatment.
