Orthopedic Foundation for Animals
A steadfast supporter of the AKC Canine Health Foundation (CHF), the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) has contributed over $650,000 to CHF in support of canine health. The AKC Canine Health Foundation and OFA are also co-sponsors of the Canine Health Information Center (CHIC).
The objectives of OFA include:
- To collate and disseminate information concerning orthopedic and genetic diseases of animals.
- To advise, encourage and establish control programs to lower the incidence of orthopedic and genetic diseases.
- To encourage and finance research in orthopedic and genetic disease in animals.
- To receive funds and make grants to carry out these objectives.
OFA has recognized that a variety of heritable diseases impact animal health. As scientific advancements enhanced the ability to diagnose heritable diseases, OFA has supported development of diagnostic criteria and databases for a number of genetic diseases in addition to hip dysplasia. OFA also supports studies on animal wellness through financial contributions to CHF. Through its support of such projects, OFA hopes to provide resources for the further understanding of, and ultimately prevention of genetic diseases.
