Project Summary

The study concluded that the DIMPLO X-ray was more sensitive to abnormalities of the elbow joint than conventional views and that it may be of benefit for early screening of dogs potentially affected with elbow dysplasia. DIMPLO is a novel type of X-ray designed by the researchers, used to diagnose abnormalities or fractures within the elbow joint. Researchers studied the elbows of 20 cadaver limbs using DIMPLO and conventional radiographic views. They also studied 100 elbows of dogs with forelimb lameness and pain, X-raying the joints using conventional views as well as DIMPLO. They then confirmed their findings with arthroscopy. DIMPLO was more sensitive to abnormalities in the elbow. Elbow dysplasia is one of the most common orthopedic problems affecting large and giant breed dogs. However, early diagnosis of the condition, critical if it is to be treated before the development of arthritis, is rarely possible with conventional X-rays.
