01077-A: Characterization of a P-Type ATPase, an Integral Membrane Protein in Dog Adipose Tissue: a Novel Target for Metabolic Diseases in Mammals

Using molecular biology techniques, this pilot research study confirmed that a novel P-type ATPase, Atp10c is highly expressed in the visceral fat tissue in dogs. This project established reagents and cell culture techniques by which this gene can be studied further in dogs. Preliminary data suggests that this gene and its protein may have important roles in affecting body fat and insulin resistance in companion animals.
