Hereditary glaucoma in Bouviers is a painful disorder that culminates in blindness and often requires eye enucleation to relieve pain. If we are able to identify the DNA sequence variant that underlies this disorder, Bouvier breeders will be able to screen their dogs for the variant and avoid breeding dogs that could produce affected offspring. Testing existing dogs may also identify affected dogs that are pre-symptomatic, enabling them to undergo treatments that ameliorate disease progression.
