Pythium insidiosum, Lagenidium giganteum forma caninum, and Paralagenidium karlingii are fungal-like infectious organisms that cause life-threatening disease in dogs through severe cutaneous and internal lesions. These infections are especially common in the Southeastern United States and are frequently seen in dogs that have access to standing bodies of water. Treatment and response to treatment differs according to the causative species. The genomic characterization of these organisms is poorly established, hindering progress in disease diagnosis and therapy. New diagnostic approaches are urgently needed to improve Oomycosis diagnostic accuracy and efficiency in dogs.
The purpose of this study is to perform whole genome sequencing (WGS) of P. insidiosum, L. giganteum f. caninum, and P. karlingii. The investigators will use comparative analysis to identify unique genes across these closely related species that can serve as diagnostic targets for development of rapid molecular diagnostic techniques. By identifying these specific genomic sequences, this project will help improve the accurate diagnosis of these severe infections in dogs. Researchers anticipate an effective and low-cost diagnostic tool that will help clinicians predict lesion progression and select appropriate treatment options.
