Chronic unintentional inhalation (aspiration) of small amounts of gastrointestinal contents into the respiratory tract can cause or worsen respiratory disease in dogs. Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) is reported in up to 90% of people with certain respiratory diseases but is under-recognized and therefore, not treated in dogs in large part because they cannot report signs of heartburn. The investigators will use an advanced imaging technique, fluoroscopy, in dogs with respiratory disease in order to document GER and other swallowing abnormalities. Results may provide new avenues of treatment for canine respiratory disease by targeting underlying GER/swallowing abnormalities.
