The overall aim of the study was to characterize steroid responsive meningitis-arteritis (SRMA) in a population of dogs in North America. The primary focus of the project was a retrospective study of the clinical features of SRMA in dogs, to determine whether breed differences exist in the clinical course of disease and response to treatment, and to evaluate pet owners’ perception of the effect of SRMA on quality of life. Based on the results from the retrospective study, we undertook an ancillary project to investigate the inheritance of SRMA in predisposed breeds that were identified in the study. Pedigrees from affected Golden Retrievers, Bernese Mountain dogs, Boxers, and Wirehaired Pointing Griffons were evaluated, and samples of blood or saliva were collected from affected dogs and their relatives for DNA extraction and banking, in order to facilitate future genetic investigations. All study objectives have been completed.
