Celebrating Breakthroughs: CHF Launches the Canine Health Discovery of the Year Award

3 min read October 7, 2025

Introduction

As the AKC Canine Health Foundation (CHF) marks 30 years of advancing canine health through science, a new chapter begins — the launch of the Canine Health Discovery of the Year Award. This annual award celebrates the single most transformative recent advancement in canine health, honoring discovery that redefines what’s possible for dogs everywhere.

Breakthrough Science as the Benchmark

To be eligible, nominated research had to represent a substantial and significant advancement in canine health — a true breakthrough that moved the field forward in a meaningful way. Each project must have been published, widely disseminated, or recognized for its importance within the past year.

Nominations were open to both established experts and emerging innovators, united by one goal: driving measurable progress that improves the health and well-being of dogs everywhere.

A Global Stage for Discovery

Unlike many research prizes, the Discovery Award is funding-agnostic.

Nominations were open to any research team worldwide whose work significantly advances the prevention, diagnosis, or treatment of canine disease, whether or not the study was supported by CHF. Because breakthrough science that improves the lives of dogs knows no boundaries, and neither should the recognition it receives.

This global approach ensures that the award reflects the best of the best — innovation that transcends institutions, funding sources, and geography.

A Rigorous, Expert-Led Process

To ensure integrity and excellence, submissions were evaluated through an exhaustive review by an independent panel of 18 distinguished canine health experts, representing fields such as veterinary medicine, genetics, oncology, and neurology. Their charge was clear: to identify research that stands apart — work that constitutes a true breakthrough, not simply incremental progress.

Defining a True Breakthrough

An iterative outcome refines what we already know. A breakthrough discovery changes what we know — reshaping our understanding of disease, opening new diagnostic frontiers, or revealing treatments that never existed before.

The Discovery Award celebrates that kind of transformative science — the rare advancement that doesn’t just influence the field today but redefines its trajectory for decades to come.

The 2025 Timeline

  • Week of October 13: Eight semi-finalists announced
  • November: Three finalists revealed and profiled
  • December 11, 2025: Winner announced live at the Canines & Cocktails Gala in Orlando, Florida

Each stage will showcase stories of perseverance, curiosity, and scientific creativity — the forces that drive every leap forward in canine health.

Why It Matters

This award is more than recognition. It’s a catalyst — a call to action for continued innovation.

By celebrating true breakthroughs, CHF hopes to accelerate the next generation of discoveries and inspire collaboration across disciplines and borders.
