Investigating Volatile Organic Compounds as Potential Markers of Canine Hemangiosarcoma by Trained Bio-detection Dogs
Canine hemangiosarcoma (HSA) is a cancer of the blood vessels of the liver, spleen and heart that is hard to diagnose until it is too late. Every two minutes, a dog dies from hemangiosarcoma. There is no screening test. New diagnostic tests are urgently needed to improve outcomes.
Researchers will train dogs to tell the difference between blood samples from dogs diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma versus dogs that are healthy or have other diseases. This research will aid the development of future techniques for diagnosing hemangiosarcoma.
Blood samples are needed from:
- Dogs diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma
- Healthy dogs that four year of age or older (any breed)
- Dogs unwell with conditions other than hemangiosarcoma and are also four years of age or older
How to participate
- Confirm your dog is eligible based on the criteria above.
- Talk to Your Vet: Ask your vet clinic to register in the study by completing the information in this link: https://www.donate-hsapvwdc.com/about-5. Please note, the only way to submit a sample is via a registered vet clinic.
- Set Up Appointment: Arrange a blood draw appointment at your registered clinic. If your dog is already scheduled for a blood draw for other reasons, inquire with your veterinarian if they can collect extra for this research.

Help Future Generations of Dogs
Participate in canine health research by providing samples or by enrolling in a clinical trial. Samples are needed from healthy dogs and dogs affected by specific diseases.
