Find answers to common questions about applying for and managing AKC Canine Health Foundation research grants.
Application & Eligibility Questions
Can I submit multiple grant proposals in one year?
Yes, investigators are welcome to submit more than one project in an RFP or per year. The proposed projects should be distinct work with separate aims, and it must be demonstrated that there is sufficient time and resources to complete both projects if funded.
Are international researchers eligible to apply?
Yes, submissions are accepted from any research organization with projects that meet the eligibility requirements, mission, and focus. Please review the RFP information and funding eligibility requirements carefully, and use the application checklist and required templates. Reviewing current and past grants may also offer helpful insights.
Does my proposal need to focus specifically on purebred dogs?
No, we are seeking proposals that have the greatest impact on canine health for all dogs. While research on purebred and purpose-bred dogs is valuable, the knowledge gained often benefit mixed breed dogs as well. Proposals should focus on contributing to the overall advancement of canine health, regardless of whether they are breed-specific.
Do I need a PhD or DVM to be a Principal Investigator?
No, Principal Investigators are not required to hold specific degrees. Proposals meeting the RFP goals will be considered if applicants demonstrate sufficient experience, expertise, and the ability to successfully lead the project.
What's the difference between a Rising Researcher and an Early Career Investigator?
Rising Researchers are at a stage of their career preparing to establish themselves as independent canine health researchers. They have support from a faculty mentor and do not yet hold a faculty appointment. Early Career Investigators hold faculty appointments and are within 6 years of completing their training. Both mechanisms aim to develop future leaders in canine health research through establishing a strong research foundation. Each program has specific application requirements detailed in the RFP.
What's the difference between Acorn and Oak grants?
- Acorn grants: Up to $30,000, including a maximum of 15% for indirect costs
- Oak grants: Over $30,000, including a maximum of 15% for indirect costs
While Oak proposals typically range from $50,000 to $200,000 with 24-month terms, proposals outside this range are considered with thorough justification. Acorn proposals generally have terms between 12 and 24 months. Specific RFPs may have different limits.
Can I resubmit a proposal?
Yes, investigators may resubmit a proposal if they receive feedback indicating that a resubmission is allowed. The resubmission must be clearly marked as such, even if the project has been re-titled or revised. Resubmitted proposals undergo a rigorous review process similar to the initial application with additional consideration given to how reviewer concerns are addressed. If an investigator submits a proposal sufficiently similar to one previously submitted but does not deem it a resubmission, it may be reclassified as such and reviewed accordingly.
Budget Questions
Can I include faculty salary in my budget?
Generally, CHF excludes:
- Salary for full-time university or industry faculty
- Professional, salaried staff (non-profit or for-profit)
- Tuition or registration fees
- Graduate student teaching responsibilities
For PIs not in full-time salaried faculty positions, salary requests are considered individually based on institutional documentation confirming their appointment status.
What are the guidelines for student and trainee salaries?
- Undergraduate salaries: Eligible with detailed time commitment and academic workload schedule
- First-year graduate students: Maximum 25% of salary, justified by project work
- Postdoc salaries: Allowed if well-justified and reasonable for project goals
- Staff support: No defined percentage limit but requires justification
How are indirect costs handled?
CHF allows a maximum of 15% indirect costs for the primary institution. Indirect costs are not allowed on subcontracts to ensure that all funds are directly applied to research.
Can I include subcontracts in my budget?
Yes, subcontracts are allowed if costs are well-justified and reasonable for the project’s goals. Please note that subcontracts cannot include indirect costs.
How should I distribute costs across project years?
A detailed budget is required for each project year. All costs must be listed and within funding eligibility guidelines. Supplies can be:
- Spread across multiple years
- Charged in first year for multi-year use
Â
All approaches require clear justification.
Project Management Questions
When should I expect my project to start?
Project start times vary but typically begin 4-6 months after submission to allow for review and contract execution. If awarded, CHF will work with Principal Investigators to adjust timelines if necessary.
Can I use commercial cell lines in my research?
Yes, commercial cell lines are permissible, however you must provide:
- Documentation of original source
- Confirmation of compliance with CHF’s Humane Use of Animal’s requirements
Are letters of support required?
Letters of support are not required for pre-proposal submissions but are encouraged for full proposals. There is no limit to the number of letters, but the most impactful ones typically come from organizations or individuals directly involved in or benefiting from the proposed project, which may include breed clubs for projects relevant to specific breeds.
Residency Program Questions
What happens if my organization doesn't match a resident after receiving the grant?
The residency award is contingent upon a resident starting the program for the award year. Awards cannot roll over to the following year.
When do residency programs typically start?
Generally, residencies start in July of the award year. However, CHF can work with mentors to adjust start times if needed.
What does the residency program funding cover?
Awards typically fund entire residency programs for 2-3 years. The RFP outlines maximum budget requests, and applications should fully justify all requested expenses.
