This study formed the basis for a linkage-based search to locate the gene for forelimb anomaly in Newfoundlands. Forelimb anomaly, in which the bones in the front legs grow abnormally, is an emerging genetic disease that is becoming of significant concern to breeders of Newfoundlands. In order to start research to find the gene causing the disease, researchers began collecting DNA samples from pedigrees in which the disease has appeared. The ultimate goal of this research is to develop a DNA-based test that will allow breeders to identify carriers so that they can make informed breeding decisions to eliminate the disease from their lines. These collected pedigrees will eventually allow researchers to conduct a linkage-based search to find the disease gene. The researchers have collected nearly enough pedigrees so that they can apply for funding to do a linkage scan.
