This summer internship project will be completion of the longitudinal part of a larger project that is currently funded by the AKC CHF (grant 02661) evaluating the effect of diet type on cardiac structure and function in dogs. The cross-sectional part of this study is complete and the longitudinal aspect is ongoing with data collection finishing by the end of May 2021. The longitudinal part of this study will determine whether outwardly healthy dogs eating non-traditional diets that have abnormalities in their echocardiogram or cardiac biomarkers, will show improvement in those abnormalities after diet change to a traditional dog food that is grain-inclusive and without legumes as top ingredients. Seventeen dogs were enrolled in this follow-up study and are being evaluated every 3 months for 1 year after diet change. Additionally, blood samples from 102 dogs at baseline and 17 dogs at baseline and 1 year after diet change will be sent for metabolomic analysis to evaluate for biochemical footprint differences between dogs eating grain-free and grain-inclusive diets and before and after diet change.
