Thirty years ago, the AKC Canine Health Foundation (CHF) set out to unleash canine health discoveries and transform the future of canine well-being. What started as a passionate, health-driven effort by the American Kennel Club has evolved into the largest organization dedicated to improving the health of all dogs. Today, CHF drives groundbreaking research that brings real hope to dogs and their owners.

For the past thirty years, through expanded efforts, innovative research, and new partnerships, CHF has made a significant impact on the health and well-being of dogs. Every dollar invested supports scientifically rigorous research targeting a range of health priorities, improving treatment options, and advancing the health of all dogs. We are making a difference, by breaking down barriers in veterinary science and collaborating with leading experts. CHF is not just advancing knowledge—it’s transforming how we care for and understand our canine companions.

Our Mission: To Improve the Health of All Dogs Through Knowledge & Discovery
Improving the lives of dogs is a mission that can take many forms: whether through scientific advancements, preventative measures to protect dogs’ health, or fueling groundbreaking discoveries. At CHF, we take pride in our thoughtful, selective approach to supporting scientifically important research that drives tangible, lasting change for dogs.

From pioneering studies to being at the forefront of precision medicine for pets, we are dedicated to supporting innovations that will make an impact.

Prevent: Proactive Steps Towards Canine Health
Beyond treatment, improving dog health also means preventing illness and protecting dogs from harmful exposures. A key 2004 CHF research project shed light on the risks posed by certain lawn chemicals, discovering that dogs exposed to these chemicals have a significantly higher risk of developing bladder cancer. By quantifying these risks and educating dog owners about preventive measures, people can now protect their dogs from these dangers and foster a healthier, safer environment.
Prevention is often the best medicine, and our work continues to focus on helping dog owners take proactive steps to ensure the health and well-being of their pets.

Treat: Diagnostic Tests and Earlier Intervention
While not all canine diseases can be cured, many can be managed effectively. Early detection and proactive treatment can make a huge difference, helping dogs live more comfortable lives even with a health condition. In some cases, catching a disease early allows veterinarians to slow its progression. For example, thanks to a major breakthrough in canine kidney disease, CHF-funded researchers have shown how early intervention can make a real difference for dogs affected by this condition.

Our research has led to the development of a genetic test for Fanconi Syndrome in Basenjis, a kidney disease that, while incurable, can be managed with proper treatment. If untreated, it can progress to kidney failure. This breakthrough highlights the critical role of genetic testing in reducing the frequency of the condition and ensuring dogs receive timely care for healthier, longer lives.

Cure: Precision Medicine for Dogs
One of the most exciting frontiers in veterinary medicine is genetic research. In 2006, CHF-funded research led to one of the first discoveries linking a specific genetic variant to a canine disease. This breakthrough showed the incredible potential of genetic testing in identifying and addressing inherited conditions in dogs.

This research was an early example of what we now know as precision medicine (sometimes called personalized medicine) —tailoring medical care to individual dogs based on their genetic makeup. By developing breed-specific genetic tests, we are diagnosing diseases earlier; and we are also making it possible to prevent, treat, and even cure medical conditions more effectively.

Precision medicine is revolutionizing the way we approach canine health, and it’s just the beginning. The future of veterinary medicine holds even more promise as we continue to unlock the secrets of the canine genome.

Our Vision: A World Where All Dogs Lead Healthy, Vibrant Lives.
At the Canine Health Foundation (CHF), we envision a world where all dogs enjoy long, healthy, and vibrant lives. Every dog deserves the best chance at a disease-free future, which is why we focus on funding the most innovative and impactful scientific research. What began as a small initiative has grown into a powerful force for change, driving groundbreaking research that brings real hope to dogs and their families.

For over 30 years, CHF has been at the forefront of funding studies on genetic diseases, improved treatments, and overall canine health. Every dollar we invest supports research with the potential to make a lasting difference in the lives of dogs. By breaking down barriers in veterinary science and collaborating with top experts, CHF is transforming how we understand and care for our canine companions—ultimately creating a healthier future for dogs everywhere
