How We Work Together

CHF and OFA collaborate on initiatives to reduce heritable diseases in dogs.

Together, we:

  • Co-created the Canine Health Information Center (CHIC), a database providing critical breed-specific health information to guide breeding decisions and support genetic testing research.
  • Fund research on genetic diseases.
  • Support the next generation of canine health leaders through fellowships and veterinary student scholarships.

Impact of Our Partnership

The partnership between CHF and OFA has created valuable resources like the CHIC database and DNA repository, advancing genetic research and improving breed health. We provide breeders with tools and information to reduce inherited diseases and foster healthier future generations of dogs. OFA’s financial support and commitment to research continue to drive progress in genetic disorders and orthopedic health, benefiting both current and future generations of dogs.

Partnership Initiatives

Canine Health Information Center (CHIC)

CHIC, a joint initiative of CHF and OFA, helps manage genetic disorders in dogs. It’s a centralized database of canine health information, including a DNA repository that supports CHF researchers working to reduce inherited diseases. CHIC sets breed-specific health testing requirements, issuing certifications to qualifying dogs, and aiding breeders and puppy buyers.

National Parent Club Canine Health Conference

OFA offers travel grants to veterinary students, covering all expenses (registration, meals, lodging, and travel) to attend the biennial National Parent Club Canine Health Conference. Recipients are then required to share a summary of the conference with their fellow students, further extending the program’s impact. These grants also provide valuable networking opportunities and exposure to researchers and mentors dedicated to canine health.
