The study to isolate and identify fungal organisms present in outer ear canals of canine normal, atopic, and otitis externa patients is completed with pending completion of statistical analysis and research manuscript. Otitis externa is defined as inflammation of the ear canal and affects an estimated 10-20% of dogs. Otitis is a multifactorial disease that presents diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. Secondary bacterial and fungal infections contribute to the severity and pathology of otitis, and will relapse until the primary cause is identified and corrected. A total of 97 dogs, and 194 ears (42 normal dogs, 23 atopic dogs, and 32 dogs with otitis) were cultured for fungal species. Interestingly, numerous fungal species were cultured from all groups and filamentous fungal species cultured included Aspergillus species a significant fungal pathogen in human patients. Finalized statistical analysis is pending to examine the relationship of the multiple variables examined in this study. Final research manuscript will be submitted prior to year end.
