Genetic Markers for Familial Subvalvular Aortic Stenosis in Newfoundlands
Subvalvular aortic stenosis (SAS) is one of the one of the most commonly diagnosed heart defects in dogs and the Newfoundland breed is over-represented in incidence of SAS. Mildly affected dogs may have a normal lifespan, but moderate or severely affected dogs are at risk for developing cardiac complications. There is currently no surgical or pharmacological intervention available that can significantly increase the lifespan of affected Newfoundlands. The aim of this study is to identify genes/variants associated with SAS in Newfoundland that can be used to develop a genetic test for this condition.
To participate in this study, we will need the following items:
- Submission of 2-3ml of whole blood in purple top EDTA tube.
- A copy of the 3-5 generation pedigree (if available)
- A copy of the echocardiogram report from a board-certified cardiologist
- Completed enrollment form
To receive a copy of the enrollment form and if you have questions regarding sample submission or the study please contact esontiveros@ucdavis.edu
