2023 Request for Proposals (RFP)

Goal of the RFP

The AKC Canine Health Foundation (CHF) is pleased to announce a call for proposals to support outstanding early career investigators focused on patient-oriented canine research. The purpose of this award is to support translational and clinical research advancing the care and health of canine patients while investing in clinical researchers who have the potential to advance the future of veterinary medicine.

Research Focus Areas

Investigators are encouraged to submit proposals in any of the 23 Research Program Areas. The research may focus on any one or a combination of the following: 1) mechanisms or progression of canine disease; 2) new diagnostics or technologies to advance the care of dogs and improve patient outcomes; 3) therapeutic interventions; 4) clinical trials.

Grant Funding

Both Acorn ($20,000 maximum including 8% maximum indirect costs) and Oak ($20,000+ including 8% maximum indirect costs) grant proposals that can be completed within the budget will be accepted for review.

A rolling deadline for 2023 online applications is open through Sunday, December 31st, 2023 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time.

Principal investigators must have a DVM (or VMD) and/or a PhD and a demonstrated interest for pursuing a career in canine health research.

Applicants should be within 6 years of completion of training at time of submission. Training includes DVM, PhD, or post-graduate studies including residency programs.

Research proposals must be in line with the AKC Canine Health Foundation's mission to advance the health of all dogs by funding sound scientific research and supporting the dissemination of health information to prevent, treat and cure canine disease.

A letter of assurance should be provided from the institution’s dean or research administration official indicating the principal investigator’s protected research time for development as an independent researcher. The letter, and any accompanying letters of support, must also address mentorship, career development opportunities, and other support available to promote the success of the applicant as a thriving investigator.

Application guidelines can be found here to help ensure all required elements of each application are complete prior to online submission. All work completed under this funding must strictly adhere to the Foundation's Humane Use of Animals Policy and eligibility requirements.
