The Bannasch laboratory in the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of California, Davis is conducting a study to identify the genes responsible for cleft lip and/ or cleft palate in dogs. These are common birth defects characterized by the failure of the lip and/or mouth to fuse during development. Individuals born with these conditions can have difficulty nursing, and as a result, cannot obtain enough nourishment on their own or can develop pneumonia. As a result, puppies are often euthanized following the discovery of cleft lip and/or palate due to their special needs and the high costs of caring for them.
