Antimicrobial Use and Prevalence of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus spp.

01/30/2017
Breed(s): -All Dogs
Study Location: Dermatology for Animals PC

This study has been designed to evaluate the use of antibiotics among multiple breeders within the Phoenix, Arizona area, as well as the prevalence of methicillin resistance of Staphylococcus spp. in this particular subset of canine breeding bitches. We will do this by soliciting breeders through the AKC website within a 50 mile radius of Phoenix, AZ. A questionnaire will be distributed regarding antibiotic use by the breeder, and survey bacterial cultures will be taken from the nares and oral cavity of dogs owned by the breeders who respond. The bacteria present on culture will be evaluated, and staphylococcal organisms will be further differentiated as methicillin resistant or susceptible with PBP2a agglutination testing. The survey answers and breeders will remain completely anonymous, and the results of the cultures will be made available to the breeders who agree to participate in the study.
