Project Summary
This study found exciting new evidence that canine osteosarcoma tumors produce both a receptor and its activating ligand. This mechanism, which normally maintains healthy bone, could therefore be aberrantly activated and this could be important in two areas that affect animals with osteosarcoma. First, this mechanism could be driving the growth of tumors. Second, this mechanism could be contributing to the painful destruction of bone that is typically seen in these tumors. This discovery enhances our understanding of osteosarcoma in dogs and provides a potential target for therapy. The next stage of these studies will seek to further elucidate the interaction between this receptor and its activating ligand and how it could potentially be used for treating osteosarcoma.
