Abstract
Pimobendan is a drug showing considerable promise for treatment of heart failure in dogs. Pimobendan not only helps the heart pump more effectively but also helps ease the workload of the heart, shifting blood to the tissues in need. Recent veterinary studies indicate that dogs with mitral valve disease seem to feel better and dogs with dilated cardiomyopathy not only feel better but live longer on this medication. One concern with Pimobendan is the potential for this drug to create erratic heart rhythms that may predispose treated animals to dying suddenly. While this has not been demonstrated in animals, a major study in humans with heart failure, showed improved exercise capacity but an increased trend towards mortality. It is established that Pimobendan is warranted in treating dogs suffering from heart failure. We now want to establish whether or not Pimobendan is pro-arrhythmic.
