Special Emphasis Application Instructions

All applications for special emphasis grants and their associated attachments are submitted online.

Applications are due May 18, 2015 by 5:00 PM EST.

Templates are available to assist with your application.

Online Form – Required

An online form must be completed to submit an application.  Please logon to our Online Grant Manager to create or log in to your account.  If you are a new applicant, select the "New Applicant?" link below to create a login.  If you are a returning applicant, please enter your e-mail and password to access your saved and completed applications.  Please contact us if you have difficulty accessing your account.

  1. Title of the proposed study 
  2. Research Organization
  3. Principal Investigator(s)
  4. Duration of the project
  5. Total amount requested in US Dollars
  6. Lay Abstract (limit to 250 words)

Abstract Page - Required

Due to our new review system and the high volume of grants received annually we are initiating a screening process for full review at the level of the Abstract Page of the grant. This page should only contain the information listed below and will be blinded with respect to PI and institution.  The Abstract Page will be scored on the relevance of the research to canine health and its applicability to the mission of the AKC Canine Health Foundation, the scientific merit of the research and its potential impact on canine health based on the expected outcomes and deliverables.  Abstract Pages are reviewed by at least 6 reviewers and scored independently of the full proposal. Reviewers will not have access to the full grant until the screening process is complete. Abstract Page scores will be used to determine if the proposal has sufficient relevance and scientific merit to justify full proposal review. Due to the high volume of applicants, Abstract Pages that do not score high enough for further review will not receive reviewer feedback. Before applying please take note of currently funded grants and of research priorities within research program areas.

Please include the following information and include the descriptive title of the section: 

  • Title: place in header of document
  • Subject of study: explain the focus of the study and the specific breed studied (if relevant)
  • Significance of study to canine health: consider explaining the following: Does the project address an important problem or a critical barrier to progress in the field? If the aims of the project are achieved, how will scientific knowledge, technical capability and/or clinical practice be improved? Will successful completion of the aims change the concepts, methods, technologies, treatments, services, or preventative interventions that drive this field?
  • Hypothesis: clearly state the hypothesis to be tested
  • Specific Aims: briefly describe the specific aims with study design and methods to be used
  • Budget and Timeline: project costs/year and duration in years
  • Expected outcomes and deliverables

Application – Required

Upload PDF attachment to the online form. (Follow the page limits for each section – Be succinct)  An application template is available.  It is recommended that you follow this template as it outlines the specific information that the CHF Grants Committee and peer reviewers will be looking for when scoring and ranking proposals. Format requirements for the application are: Font Style - Arial or Times New Roman; Font Size - 11 or 12 pt; Margins at 1 inch.

Signature Page - Required

To submit an application you must attach a PDF Signature Page.  Upload a one page PDF attachment to the online form which includes the signatures of the Principal Investigator(s) and the Organization's Sponsored Programs Officer. This page should have much of the cover page information.  A signature page template is available.

Industry Involvement Disclosure

The AKC Canine Health Foundation values our corporate partners, and as such, invites scientists from the companies as representatives to engage in our grant review process. We also strongly value our researchers and their need for confidentiality. Our corporate grant review members are bound by strict confidentiality agreements. This form serves to notify the Foundation if it is acceptable for your grant to be made available for review by our grant review committee members who represent corporate entities.

Cited Literature

Upload a single PDF attachment to the online form containing cited literature relevant to the proposed research project.

Letters of Support - Optional

Letters of Support should be included if your grant requires collaboration, consultation or unique services that are not part of normal research infrastructure.

Please note that Breed Club support matters. The mission of the AKC Canine Health Foundation is to prevent, treat and cure canine disease, and our Breed Clubs are at the heart of this mission. Letters of Support from Breed Clubs are not a pledge to financially support the grant if funded, but rather, are intended to show enthusiasm for the science in your proposal, clarify the significance of your research to their breed, and verify their willingness to collaborate in sample collection.

To identify breeds that consider your area of research to be of high priority please consult the Breed Specific Health Concerns and contact us for health liaison contact information for specific breeds.

Upload a single PDF attachment to the online form containing additional letters of support from Breed Clubs or co-investigators if they were not previously submitted with the Pre-Proposal.


How to Submit an Application

Log in to the Canine Health Foundation Online Grant Manager to Start a New Application or Access a Saved Application.  

Once your proposal is submitted, it cannot be changed. Please review and/or print before clicking SUBMIT.  Make sure you receive an email confirming that your application has been SUBMITTED, not SAVED.
