ACORN Application Instructions

 

To submit an application you must complete a short form online and attach a PDF Research Proposal. The information entered online must match your proposal exactly.  There are five parts to the application.

 Online Form – Required

Start a new application online at New ACORN Application. If you are returning to work on a saved application, go to Continue CHF Applications.  Information to be entered in the online form includes:

  1. Title of the proposed study 
  2. Research Organization
  3. Principal Investigator(s)
  4. Duration of the project
  5. Total amount requested in US Dollars
  6. Lay Abstract (limit to 250 words)

 

 Research Proposal – Required

Upload PDF attachment to the online form. (limit to 15 pages)  An application template is available. Format information for the research proposal is: Font Style: Arial or Times New Roman; Font Size: 12 pt; Margins: 1 inch

Cover Page
  1. Title of the proposed study

Study Proposal
  1. Scientific Summary (250 words or less)
  2. Statement of Purpose/Hypothesis/Objectives
    • Specific objectives (must be different from ongoing or pending research)
  3. Background of Proposed Research
    • Significance to Canine Health (If applicable, significance to specific breeds)
    • Brief Literature Review
    • Preliminary Studies - Description of preliminary data that supports the hypothesis. Please indicate if previous CHF funding was used to generate the data.
  4. Experimental Methods and Design
    • Detailed description about methods to be used for each objective.
  5. Animals (limit 100 words)
    • Since CHF has restrictions on dogs used in research, please clearly indicate where the participating dogs and/or samples will be obtained. Specific treatment protocols for the animals should be included in the Experimental Methods and Design. CHF will not fund the purchase of dogs, dog research colonies, projects involving disease induction or injury models in dogs, or euthanasia of healthy dogs. 
  6. Expected outcome, significance and application of findings
  7. Anticipated Problems or Obstacles

 

List of Investigators

List the Principal Investigator(s) and Co-Investigators with their credentials and role descriptions. A complete Biographical Sketch should be uploaded separately.

    • Salary (non-tenured, non-tenure track, non-professional investigators)

    • Institutional Indirect Costs (Max of 8%)
  2. Review the Items Ineligible for Funding to find the list the Foundation does not financially support.
  3. Budget Justification
    • The tenure status information must be provided for all Principal Investigators and Professorship titles requesting salary or they will be assumed to be tenure or tenure-tracked and not eligible for funding. 

 

Project Timeline

Identify intermediate project milestones with dates for specific objectives to be completed.

 

Additional Funding

Current and Pending Funding Sources for research on proposed topic and related-research topics.

 Signature Page – Required

To submit an application you must attach a PDF Signature Page. Upload an one page PDF attachment to the online form which includes the signatures of the Principal Investigator(s) and the Organization's Grant Officer. This page should have much of the cover page information. A signature page template is available.

 Investigator Biographical Sketch - Required 

Upload PDF attachment with the full Biographical Sketch/CV.

 

 Letters of Support – Optional

Upload a single PDF attachment to the online form containing letters of support from Breed Clubs or co-investigators. Investigators are strongly encouraged to establish collaborations with breed clubs who are relevant to their research. Contact information for specific breed clubs can be provided by CHF; please contact CHFGrants@akcchf.org.
