Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA)

A steadfast supporter of the Canine Health Foundation, The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) is a founding donor and has contributed nearly $150,000 to the Canine Health Foundation in support of canine health. The objectives of the OFA include collating and disseminating information concerning orthopedic and genetic diseases of animals. In this role, the OFA advises, encourages, and establishes control programs to lower the incidence of orthopedic and genetic diseases, and finances the research that will lead to cures in these diseases. Over the past 10 to 15 years the OFA has recognized that a variety of heritable diseases impact animal health. As scientific advancements enhanced the ability to diagnose heritable diseases, the OFA has supported development of diagnostic criteria and databases for a number of genetic diseases in addition to hip dysplasia. The OFA also supports studies on animal wellness through financial contributions and is a wonderful partner of the AKC Canine Health Foundation. Through its support of such projects, the OFA hopes to provide resources for the further understanding of, and ultimately prevention of genetic diseases. Canine Health Information Center (CHIC)

The Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) is a centralized canine health database jointly sponsored by the AKC Canine Health Foundation and the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA). Its mission is to provide a source of health information for owners, breeders, and scientists that will assist in breeding healthy dogs. CHIC works with parent clubs in the identification of health issues for which a central information system should be established. Once established, CHIC maintains a central health information system in a manner that will support research into canine disease and provide health information to owners and breeders.
